The Mississippi Burning :: Civil Rights Racism Equality Essays
The Mississippi Burning Mississippi Burning brings awareness to the ways of the Jim Crow south. In 1964, three civil rights workers made their way to Neshoba County. Two of the workers were white and the third boy was black. The suspicious disappearance of the men brought the attention of the FBI. Some people question whether the FBI only got involved because two of the workers were white. This movie reveals the improper treatment of African Americans at a time when every American citizen was guaranteed equal rights under the law. Many African Americans felt that there was little concern for the African American civil rights worker. The FBI was determined to find out what actually happened to these boys. The local authorities said that the men were probably in New York or Canada laughing at all of the commotion they had caused. The racism that African Americans dealt with is very clear throughout the entire movie. The town did not feel that it was necessary for the FBI to be investigating the mysterious disappearance. They assured the FBI that there was nothing to uncover and only wanted them to stop disturbing their ââ¬Å"peacefulâ⬠town. The Brown vs. Board of education decision is not evident in Mississippi Burning. African Americans sat in the back of the restaurant, separated from whites. The community was not integrated. There was a specific part of town where the African Americans lived. African Americans and whites did not interact very much. The KKK played a major part in controlling these ââ¬Å"niggers.â⬠When one of the FBI agents talked to a local black boy in public, the boy was brutally assaulted by KKK members. The way that whites treated African American shows how their struggle for freedom still continued. Some of the local law-enforcement were members of the Klan. They played a role in the murdering of the three boys. When the FBI came to town, hostility in the town grew. Many African Americans wished that the FBI would just leave because they were just causing more problems. African Americans were being beaten, having their houses destroyed, churches burnt down, and some even lynched.

Ethical Paper
Ethics Reflection Paper By: Josh Wilber STR/581 Dr. Jill Hagist Ethical behavior within the workplace is important to have good communication between employees, management, and end users. One key definition of ethics is that ethics are mainly the kind of values and morals an individual or society finds desirable or appropriate (farzanalibaloch. blogspot. com). The main focus is to show the customers having a successful business between ventures is based on honesty and integrity that will lead to long-term success. This paper will explain the role of ethics and social responsibility in developing a strategic plan, considering stakeholder needs, and will explain how your ethical perspective has evolved throughout the program. It is important that workplace policy with ethics must be in harmony with all laws and regulations that are currently in force in the jurisdiction where the business operates (wisegeek. com. This helps to ensure that basic workplace ethics preclude any pressure or c oercion to engage in actions that are considered to be illegal, promote discrimination in the workplace, support unfair hiring and firing practices, or allow wages to be set that are below the minimum legal standards for the area (wisegeek. com). If a company is unethical it will take many years to build back the image they lost due to unethical behavior. Ethics are developed at all stages within a company from the first time you hire an employee up until the company releases an IPO and goes public. The first step to ethical behavior occurs when you are conducting a strategic plan. The company has to realize the role of ethics and social responsibility to implement a positive plan. Ethics have a lot to do with the companyââ¬â¢s vision and how they perceive themselves within the marketplace. There are three questions that every company should ask when they are integrating ethics into their business; what do we stand for? What is our purpose, and what values do we have? The next ste p for the strategic plan would be to develop a mission plan, a company vision and company values. Some examples of the way a business can integrate ethics into business are to have a framework and process for the resolution of ethical issues, have the right organizational structure, have rewards based on the right metrics, make employee development part of strategy and make ethics training part of employee development, and to encourage all employees to be challenging and demanding in the ethical domain (scu. edu). Stakeholders are considered people or groups that have an interest in the company. Stakeholders include employees, investors, customers, shareholders, suppliers, and others. If the stakeholders feel like a company is unethical customers, doing actual business within the company may turn shareholders, suppliers, and investors away. One way a company can keep track is to do annual ethical reviews, and also activities where they can update the employee on ethical standards and policies that are considered company standard. An example is that Pfizer is currently a market leader and had prior allegations of animal testing with their laboratories and still has to answer to the media regarding the unethical behavior with PETA.Ethics Awareness Inventory is a test that discusses the ethical perspective from an individual. The Most lined ethical view was within Character. My beliefs rely on the ability of individuals to make sound moral judgments and I do not believe that it is enough to comply with some preset standards or principles of right and wrong to find the solution to a complex ethical dilemma (EAI inventory). One belief is that ethics should focus on ways to help people achieve moral excellence. When asked to judge whether an individualââ¬â¢s actions are ethical, it would be looked beyond the actions to examine the individualââ¬â¢s character (EAI inventory).Within business this perspective that is inline with Character will go a long way for a su ccessful career/opportunity. Honesty and integrity is the key to having a successful business where Stakeholders develop trust. The role of ethics and social responsibility in developing a strategic plan creates a foundation for how the company wants to remain ethical throughout their business cycle. In Arthur Millerââ¬â¢s play the crucibl Essay
In Arthur Millerââ¬â¢s play the Crucible, Reverend Hale changes as the plot unfolds. When Reverend first arrives in Salem he is certain he will use scientific methods to find witches. As the court hearing begins to unfold, Reverend Hale opposes the actions being taken, thus begins using his own judgments. Hale attempts to save the guiltless when he realizes they were convicting innocent people. The plot takes place in 1619, in a small town named Salem. The town was young; being only 40 years old was very religiously strict. A group of teen girls were caught dancing naked in the woods. They started making accusations of witchcraft across the town. Reverend Hale, who was a witch expert, was called from a near by town to put a stop to the matter. One reason Reverend hale changed as the plot unfolds is because he at first believes that he will be using scientific methods to find witches. Hale firmly follows the law to sustain order. By keeping to his books he prepares himself to pay no heed to conclusions. He trusts his books to keep control over the problems arising in Salem. ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ all the invisible world, caught defined, and calculated. In these no fear now-we shall find him out if he has come among us, and mean to crush him utterly if he has shown his face. â⬠(Miller, 39) One reason Reverend Hale changed as the plot unfolds is because he at first believes that he will be using scientific methods to find witches. Subsequently Reverend starts to evolve his thinking during the trail and starts going by his own judgment. He pleads with the judge to let Proctor return, only to be rejected by him. Hale fought against the judgeââ¬â¢s verdict realizing it was unjust. Hale then decided to leave the court. ââ¬Å"I denounce these preceding. I quit the court. â⬠(Miller, 115) Subsequently Reverend starts to evolve his thinking during the court hearing and starts going by his own judgment. Then at the end, Reverend changes even more when he realizes they were accusing every one of witchcraft and tries to save the innocent. Reverend declares he will not take a life of an innocent person ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ I am a minister of the Lord, and I dare not take a life without there be proof so immaculate no slightest qualm of conscious may doubt it. â⬠(Miller, 99) He realizes that it is not the convicted people, but that of a hunt to find a cause for there problems. He encourages Mr. proctor to confess to witchery. Also pleading with Procterââ¬â¢s wife, he protests the foolishness of admitting to something you did not do. Finally Reverend Changes for the better realizing that not everyone is a witch and attempts to save the innocent Hale changes from being in favor of the witch trails to opposing it due to the amount of unnecessary convictions with sentences of death. He finds that, when you stop accusing people every for every incident and mishaps, many of the folks are innocent. It is hard to believe that many innocent people were killed during the Salem witch trials. Certainly nothing like that will ever happen today. Reverend Hale changes as the scheme unfolds in Arthur millerââ¬â¢s play, the crucible. Work Cited Miller, Arthur. The Crucible. Thesis Statement and Outline Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Thesis Statement and Outline - Essay Example b) Killing is inhuman and all of us should get together to persuade our leaders to completely ban war. Instead of fighting amongst themselves, soldiers of different countries should get together to fight terrorism. c) Sometimes they are made slaves by the army of the other country. They are treated just like the way hostages are treated by terrorists. This is a heavy price they have to pay in order to be loyal to their countrymen. So war should be banned in order to stop crimes against humanity. Conclusion: It is a torture to live in this world where either through media or direct experience we witness several crimes against humanity regularly. Today children are growing in this atmosphere and getting transformed into adults with lesser feelings and sympathy. This is not their fault. Some of the crimes have become so common, that they have started looking normal, especially to the impressionable minds. Therefore to build a healthy society and to stop its members from becoming immune to the crimes against humanity let's pledge to turn this world into a better place or in other words lets pledge to stop crimes against humanity.

How do general anaesthetics cause loss of consciousness Essay
How do general anaesthetics cause loss of consciousness - Essay Example Usually, the general anaesthetics are used during long surgical operations that are also very painful. For example, during hysterectomy, hernia repairs, removal of gall bladder and more (Perry 2010, p. 67). Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is one the research conducted in search for the effects of anaesthetics in humans. The PET study covers the activity of both inhibitory and excitatory neurons that describe the conscious states of mind (Alkire, Haier and Fallon 2000, p. 371). Other studies have identified that general anaesthetics affects the thalamus, cerebellum, midbrain reticular formation, occipital cortex and basal forebrain. Research has revealed that the anaesthetics suppress the thalamocortical circuits, which interfere with the transfer of signals across the neural networks (Squire 1996, p. 114). These agents thalamocortically suppresses the regions of the brain differently although some theories tend to assume that the agents affect the entire brain, mostly focusing on the midbrain reticular formation and thalamus. The general anaesthetics do not affect the brain activities the same way. They affect different regions of the brain thus producing different states of unconsciousness. While humans are asleep, the flow of blood in the thalamus reduces, which means low metabolic rates which lead to unconsciousness. On another hand, anaesthesia involves artificial suppression of the metabolism processes in the thalamus, which make human beings unconscious, as well. In their PET studies, Dr.Alkire, Fallon and Haier used 11 unconscious brains and 11 conscious brains. They used two anaesthetic agents, which include the isoflurane and the halo-thane. They recorded the regional uptakes of fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) in each human brain of the subjects of the study. Then, they compared FDG uptake patterns of the unconscious subjects with the conscious subjects(Alkire, Haier and Fallon 2000, p.

How social or economic issues in this country influence the roles Essay
How social or economic issues in this country influence the roles women and men play in the family today - Essay Example and aided by the feminist movement, the number of women in the workforce has escalated since the 1970ââ¬â¢s, a social phenomenon that has redefined the roles of both parents. Increasingly, mothers are contributing more to the family finances while fathers are spending more of their time caring for the kids. Though some decry this inevitable and necessary circumstance because they fear the disintegration of the traditional family unit is detrimental for children, the evidence shows that the opposite is true. For the vast majority of mothers, going to work every day while leaving their children with surrogate moms is clearly not a matter of choice as some have suggested. Of the women who work in two-parent homes, more than 80 percent have spouses who receive $30,000 per year or less. A motherââ¬â¢s choice in many cases is to either allow their children to live in abject poverty or to go to work. Though among the minority, some working mothers have chosen to continue their career pursuits following childbirth but in either case, the workplace is seldom conducive to the family concerns of mothers, or fathers for that matter. Seldom do employers allow a mother to take a year or two off to care for small children without sacrificing position or employment status and are generally upset when mom is often called away to attend matters concerning a child. The choices are hard for mothers. The unsympathetic attitudes towards working mothers among some factions of the public and most employers are not constructive nor aligned with reality (ââ¬Å"Working Mothersâ⬠, 1999). Today, more than a quarter of all American kids reside in homes containing one parent, usually the mother, who must work to support the family. Some believe that the label ââ¬Ëgood motherââ¬â¢ implies one that dutifully fills her societal role by remaining home with the children. This belief is based solely on preconceived and outdated stereotypes and not on prevalent scientific data which indicates that
